Windows Sandbox: What is and how to enable it

It’s one of the biggest novelties in Windows 10 May Update 2019. Windows Sandbox it’s like a test field that has the advantages of virtual machines, but it works in a less tricky way, without having to configure or install anything.

This great feature provides an isolated environment that allows you to test applications with the peace of mind that no change or installation you make inside it will affect your computer, or the main operating system. This feature comes natively integrated in Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise, it only needs to be enabled at Windows Features. What is Windows Sandbox? 🤔

Windows Sandbox is a lightweight desktop environment, conceived to run applications in a safe way on an isolated environment.

The isolated Windows environment uses hardware-based virtualization to isolate the kernel, which in turn relies on Microsoft’s hypervisor to run a separate kernel that isolates Windows Sandbox from the host. In addition, it features smart memory management and a virtualized GPU. Feature was first included in Insider Build 18305.

We could say that it’s something that remember us to virtual machines, but this is much simpler because it’s not required to install or configure anything. You just simply execute Windows Sandbox, and the environment runs allowing you to to have an expendable Windows 10 inside your main OS, where you can make full test of dangerous or suspicious applications without having any risk. No changes are applied in the main OS. The moment you just simply close your Sandbox, everything you’ve made into it gets lost.

The idea is precisely that.. If you have downloaded an app that you believe it could be dangerous or put your system in risk, you can install it without the fear of discovering a troyan or backdoor that could compromise your personal data or the system stability. You can also make use of Sandbox to test Windows configurations, so if you’re not convinced with the outcome you can just simply forget about it.

Last but not least, in order to make user of this feature, your computer needs to comply with some specifications that are above the minimum required to run Windows 10. Don’t worry, they are not that demanding. You need to have a CPU with 2 cores, but 4 are recommended with support of HyperThreading (Intel) or SMT (AMD). 64 bits is mandatory. You need to check -if you haven’t done it before- that virtualization support in your motherboard BIOS is enabled. 1GB of free storage is required -an SSD is recommended- and at least 4GB of RAM, but it’s recommended to have 8GB.

How to activate the Sandbox Feature 💡

This feature doesn’t come enabled by default. To activate it, just open your Windows Search and type “features”. Click on the best match> Turn Windows features on or off.

The features section will open, where you can activate or deactivate some of the hidden functions of Windows 10. In this window, you need to look for “Windows Sandbox” as shown in this screenshot.

Place a mark on it and click Ok. There’s a chance that Windows 10 asks to reboot, but after that it will give access to Windows Sandbox.

Once you’ve restarted your computer, you can make use of this feature. Therefore by simply clicking at the Start Menu and searching for Windows Sandbox, you can instantly launch it with two clicks.

A window will open with another Windows 10 inside your current Windows. Inside this virtual OS, you can make all the testing, application installing and modifications you desire, and when you close the window all these changes simply get vanished 👌
